Outline

The outline shows the declarations of the current object as a tree under the heading Outline: fields, keys, controls, triggers, procedures and so on. Use it to see an object's structure at a glance and to jump to a declaration. Select a node to scroll the Object view to it.

Opening it

  • It is the right panel of the Objects page.
  • When it is hidden, choose View › Show › Outline, or double-click the splitter at the right edge of the object view.

Prism for C/AL outline narrowed by a search, with the Showing X of Y line and its tooltip and Reset
1 2 3 4
The outline narrowed by a search.
#NameDescription
1SearchThe search text. The outline narrows as you type.
2Showing X of YHow many nodes the filter and search leave. Hover over it to see what hides nodes (Types, Scope, Search); select it to open the filter popup.
3ResetResets the filter to the outline's default types. The search stays.
4Matching nodeA node that matches, with the nodes above it.

The search box uses the same syntax as the object index; see Search syntax. What it matches depends on the node:

NodeMatched by
FieldName or field number.
Reference to an objectObject id and name.
Table relationThe name of the related table.
Documentation lineIts text.
PermissionObject type and number.
Any other declarationThe name shown.

A node stays visible when it or a node below it matches. Nodes without text show only while the search is empty.

Pinned rows and the row menu

Pinned rows and the context menu of a declaration.
#NameDescription

2Copy Prism Path to ClipboardThe context menu of a declaration.
  • While you scroll, the nodes above the top row stay pinned, so you always see where you are. Select a pinned row to go to it, or select its chevron to collapse it.
  • Right-click a declaration for Copy Prism Path to Clipboard, which copies its Prism path.
  • Alt+Left, Alt+Right and Ctrl+Space navigate as in the rest of the window.

Filter popup

Select Filter and display, or the Showing X of Y line, to choose which kinds of node the outline shows. Your choices apply as you select them.

Prism for C/AL outline filter popup for a codeunit with presets, node types and the Kinds switch
1 2 3 4 5
The outline filter for a codeunit.
#NameDescription
1PresetsChoose a set of node types in one selection. See Presets.
2Reset to defaultReturns to the outline's default types for this object type. The search is not affected.
3Node typesA check box per node type the object has, with its count, grouped under Code, Data, Layout and Metadata. See Node types.
4KindsUnder Display: shows each node's kind beside it, such as Local Procedure or FlowField. On by default.
5Node countShowing X of Y nodes.

Point at a node type and an Only link appears beside it: select it to show that type alone.

An object with both global and local procedures also gets a Procedure scope section under the node types: Global and Local, with counts, show or hide global and local procedures. Event publishers are not affected.

Presets

Prism offers only the presets that make a difference for the current object.

PresetShows
AllEvery node type.
Data modelFields and keys.
LayoutControls, actions, request forms and pages, data items, dataset items, elements and menu nodes.
CodeProcedures, event publishers and subscribers, events, triggers, trigger events and XMLport events.
EventsEvent publishers and subscribers, events, trigger events and XMLport events.
API surfaceGlobal procedures and event publishers.

When you change a check box yourself, no preset is selected.

Node types

GroupNode typesHidden by default

DataFields, KeysNone
LayoutControls, Actions, Request form, Request page, Data items, Dataset items, Elements, Menu nodesNone
MetadataProperties, Permissions, DocumentationProperties, Permissions

Hiding a type hides its nodes and everything under them. Nodes of no type in the list, such as report sections, table relations and menu items, always show.

Used global variables are the global variables each procedure and trigger uses. Prism finds them only while Show used global variables is on, on the Settings page. It is off by default.

Filters per object type

Prism remembers the filter per object type: what you choose for a table applies to every table, and a codeunit keeps its own choice. Reset to default in the popup, or Reset under the search box, returns the current object type to the default types.

Show only a table's fields and keys

Use this to read a table's data model without its triggers and code.

  1. Open the table and select Filter and display in the outline.
  2. Select the Data model preset for fields and keys, or point at Fields and select Only for fields alone.

The outline shows only those nodes, and every table you open afterwards does the same until you select Reset.

Show what a codeunit offers other objects

Use this to see what other objects can call in a codeunit.

  1. Open the codeunit and select Filter and display in the outline.
  2. Select the API surface preset.

The outline lists the global procedures and the event publishers.
